I asked this question (switching between vga and svga text-modes)s
a while ago, but after all, the following discussion did not get
anywhere. On the other hand, there seems to be interest in such
a thing as extended VT-switching, so here I go again:
Doing extended VT-switching (normal text, extended text modes, graphics)
via BIOS may be a real pain. So why not include it into the kernel?
At boottime, there is allready a check for several SVGA-cards, so
this work is done. Only thing remaining :-) is to write the
code that handles such VT-switching. OK, that won't be no fun.
On the other hand, the benefits would be worth it (I think).
Imagine gnuplot and some other graphics applications running
at the same time, not using Xwindows, but vgalib for example.
Don't flame me, I really like X, but vgalib is much smaller
and would be enough for some special applications.
Of course, if there are graphics available, textmodes will
not be a too big problem..
Happy Linuxing, Bernd d
