In article <PCG.93Mar27154010@decb.aber.ac.uk> you write:

Hi there,

I just wanted to make a couple of comments.

1) Spread-sheets are great to get a readable screen, if you know enough of
the specs about your monitor to use one.

2) Forget about using a spread-sheet, to try to fine-tune the results to
   the limit of manufactor specs.

Once you have a viewable term window, there is a program call vgaset on
sunsite.unc.edu that allows you to interactively fine-tune your display.
By using this program I was finially able to generate a flicker-free display
for my ATI Graphics Ultra Pro in 1152x910. By trial-and-error I had failed
in the past to even get close enough to this goal to realize it was possable.

When I downloaded the program vgaset, there where a few bugs that made it
unreliable. Hopefully those are all fixed now, but you never know what
someone with a different graphics card will find.
