as I use SIGCHLD in a program I have under development and it
works on linux (though it does not on AIX :-) ).

My problems with portmap where somewhat more serious:

        o I encountered the same problem and fixed it in a more
                crude manner I just inserted an exit at the appropiate
                position. ;-)
        o The more serious problem to me was that I was unable to
                make portmap survive a broadcast-request! But these
                experiment where long time ago when 0.97 was new, they
                might have vanished by now!
