From: joel@wam.umd.edu (Joel M. Hoffman) Subject: [SOLVED] Serial connection over null-modem --> 4800bps max Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1993 23:22:38 GMT
Actually, I'm not sure if this is a work around or a solution. At any
rate:
A while ago I posted that when I connected my '286 DOS machine to
Linux via a null modem cable, running Kermit on the DOS end and getty
on the Linux end, I kept getting overrun errors on the DOS end.
Enabling h/w flow control did not help the problem. I couldn't go
faster than 4800bps.
Someone suggested that I not run ansi.sys on the DOS side. So I took
that out of my config.sys file and now I can go as high at 38400! So,
if I can live w/o ansi.sys, I'm set. (Too bad I can't disable/enable
ansi.sys -- rebooting is a pain.)
Now, my understanding was that h/w flow control was supposed to make
it possible for a slow device to talk to a fast device. So, with h/w
flow control, I thought I should have been able to use ansi.sys
slowing things to a crawl, and not get errors. Am I wrong here?
So, I still don't know if a) h/w flow control doesn't do what I
thought it did or b) I simply now don't need h/w flow control anymore.
And I have no idea if h/w flow control is working or not.
Many, many thanks to all of the people who made my problem their own
and sent me helpful suggestions!!!
