Hello,
I apologize if this the incorrect place to post this, but I have been
reading the group and seen similar posts. I have also read all of the FAQ's
relevant to my questions. If I overlooked something, again, I apologize.
I am running Linux R.99pl6 (SLS) on a 486/33. A couple of quick questions
first:
1. Why is there a security problem with /dev/Sty1 being 666 versus 622 for
use with kermit?
2. Why, on boot up, is a mis-matched magic message displayed from ex2fs?
3. When upgrading Linux I have read it is best to just reinstall the entire
thing. That... it was not recommended to install a newer version of
Linux on top of Linux. Is this true? Why?
4. I did not appear to have any trouble installing Linux, however, the
"menu" program does not appear to function properly. On almost every
selection under software installation utilities it will stop running
with an unknown error message. Anyone know what this is?
5. During the installation I received a few messages along the lines on
"...can't do this because such and such already exists...". Is this
normal? I also had one disk report that it was expecting something
"...binary..." or some such. Any ideas?
6. On boot up the machine display the normal message of "...hit return to see
svga options, space to continue...", but when I try to look at the SVGA
choices it immediately pops into some high res mode and gets on with
booting. Doesn't offer me a choice at all. What could be causing this?
Could it be because I am running a Diamond Stealth 24 VLB?
7. I am quite confused with the X/Diamond issue. It appears that 386X will
support Diamond cards. However, I have seen one or two posts implying
that they have Diamond cards working. I also saw a post mentioning some
S3 server and that it was working with a Stealth card, but when I looked
the S3 docs it explicitly stated that it did not support Diamond cards.
So..... will the Diamond Stealth 24 VLB work or not? How do I get it
to work?
8. After installing the system, including the t series, I started playing
around with a couple of things. I noticed that whenever I typed "man tex"
or "man latex", etc... I got an unformatted man page sent to the screen.
I fixed the problem, but I was wondering if this is a common problem with
the t series of disks or did something go wrong during installation?
Please respond by email. Thank you for all of your help.
