I ended up fixing my 4MB -> 8MB upgrade. The problem had nothing to do
with the swap partition. One of the SIMMs was not quite positioned
correctly. This caused no problems during the memory check (!) however
it caused Linux to fail. Redoing the memory installation fixed the
problem.
