Two things that might cause this come to my mind:

1. Your old binaries weren't demand paged, so they wouldn't require the
minimum of few 4K pages of disk space. Try to compile with the -N option
to see, if this is the case. (You can also check, what ldd, size and
file say about the old and new binaries.)

2. Your programs aren't stripped. Compare the sizes after stripping both
the old and new binaries. The new libraries may link in more symbol
information, so new unstripped programs become larger than similarly
compiled programs with older libraries.
