Well, I took my chances. I have a 486/33 with A Diamond Stealth S3,
and an Optiquest 2000 (15") monitor. Despite the remarks about
this card , Linux and XFree, I decided to try it out.
Got the XS3 server from that UK site mentioned somewhere in the FAQ's.
It had the server, xbench and vgaset (which I never figured out or used).
The Xconfig that came with it helped. It did not work at first (when I
tried 1024x768 NI). It would complain about no matching dot clock.
But it came up when I chose 640x480. After it came up once like this,
the other mode (1024x768NI) came up. In fact I am happily typing
from within it right now.
The catch is, it tries to sync a few times (in the higher res mode)
before coming up, and that nakes me a little uneasy as it makes that
Ztt...Ztttttt sound for a sec. (Maybe I'll regret doing this!).
The other (of course) catch is, each time I switch on the machine,
I have to bring it up once in VGA before the SVGA works.
Speed is reasonable. With xbench, I get 38000 Xstones, compared
to 25000 of a Sparc 1 and 97000 of a sparc 2.
Do I risk some serious monitor toast ?
