Imagine, you invented the mousetrap. But only every 20th person
has a mouse problem, so if you tell 20 people about your invention (how many
people did you tell about Linux?) you will reach 1 customer.
Non of the other 19 will tell their friends about your invention (=Linux).
If your customer is satisfied, maybe he will tell 10 friends about your
invention. So you sold 1 trap.
Marketing is to find out who has a mouse problem, to go to these people and sell
them a solution for their problem (=a mouse trap).
