Subject: [Q] ATI Graphics Ultra - X386 vs. Xlinux.8514 - Opinions?
Date: 18 Mar 1993 19:03:02 GMT

I have read many articles in this newsgroup stating that they are
able to use the ATI Graphics ULTRA with the X386 server. I have,
so far, been unable to do this. Perhaps I could use someones
Xconfig, or perhaps I need something more recent than what comes
with SLS 99.6? I've been using and administering UNIX for years,
but have to admit i'm mystified by the Xconfig stuff.

I have the Xlinux.8514 running, and it's beautiful. But I can't
help believing i'd be better off using the X386 server (even at
800x600). My reasoning? I don't believe that the 8514 server
is complete or up-to-date (could be wrong?). The <CTL-ALT>
sequences don't work (for me), local (on Linux) display of
remote programs does not work (using same config as X386, and
making sure "xhost" is used to disable security), etc. Also,
I have been totally unable to use "xdm" with it, or to enable
X to be run at boot-up. Although my monitor is not syncing with
the X386 server operation, I can observe that the problems I am
having with Xlinux.8514 are not occuring while served with X386.

Please don't think i'm complaining. My actual question is 1) should
X386 work with the Ultra at at least 800x600 (hopefully better) and
2) Do other people using the Xlinux.8514 server experience what i'm
seeing with it. If i'm on the right track with the 8514 server, fine.
But if the X386 server should work except for my ignorance, perhaps
I can overcome that!

Thanks!
