I'm the guy who originally asked the question.
Though I got many replies, none were really definitive.
Here's what I managed to glean from the replies.
There were two problems.
The first was that all hell broke loose when you tried to access the
disk. The second was spurious timeout messages regarding the disk.
If none of these things has happened to you, and you have Linux running
from that disk, then you probably have a more recent version of the
drive that doesn't have these problems. I heard that Maxtor had fixed
them with a firmware upgrade. Some of the older ones may not be
fixable. By the way, these problems only existed with the 200 or so
meg drive (the one you have). The others didn't have any problems.

Keep in mind that I'm not an expert in these matters.
