I have followed this long enuf now! Mike, this is THE NET, and not
everybody who yells loudest represents the majority! I could not care
less what you are doing! As long as it is legal: go right ahead!
If you do not find any takers: tuff luck for the entrepeneur....
But I think, you will find enuff traitors [ ;-) ] to support your
efforts here. Linus sure doesn't mind. He certainly understands the
dynamics involved better than most of us (LINUS?).
I want to see LINUX becomming a significant force in the OS -MARKET-,
just to show MicroSchrott that they are decades behind. That sure as
heck takes commercial apps. If it is good, I will even buy it. Just convince
me.
There are some commercial apps I just can't live without! If I can not get
anything similar for linux: linux is dead, as far as I am concerned.
The XENIX trick was very encouraging!
I have to make a living USING the OS, not developing for it. I like linux
enuff to try to USE it, while making a living.
SORRY, my student years are over... I have to live in the real world now.
(Students: no offense, I meant doctorants and professors)
(aforementioned: no offense, I meant the ones in retirement at age 30)
(whoever the shoe fits: YES I meant YOU!)
Linux is just too good to be used as a toy for burning some time with. It is
better than many commercial OS'es. It deserves recognition of the 'for profit'
community.
Expecting a free lunch seems to be very trendy today. Most of the good things
do cost money though. Even more cudos to linus (and everybody else who
contributed for free) for giving this excellent (meaning USEFULL) piece
of work to us.
So: try to make some money out of your work. If you feel, you have to: fine!
Do not blame me, if you do not find any takers. That means only, that your
product was not good enuff...
Never mind the purists, they (censored that myself)......
NB: I like the concept of competition. So if someone is offering SW for free
that comes even close to yours: You won't see my money. That is how it works.
Philosophical thought:
You will not find democracy here: The ones with the most stamina left after
a working(?) day will have the loudest voice!
I really enjoyed blowing up about this! Linux is too important to me, to
just seeing it going to waste... I promise, it will not happen again for the
next 16 minutes...
mfg, Remco
(afterthought: I just wish linus would get somethig (hard) out of that.)
