From: choe@dirac.phys.washington.edu Subject: Help: SLS 99pl6 a1 just sits idle at me. Date: 14 Mar 1993 11:25:18 GMT
Well, I heard so many good things about linux, and decided to install
on my system. Unfortunately, however, I couldn't go more than 1st disk
of SLS 99pl6 package.
=====Configuration:
386/387 16 MHz, Intel-made motherboard.
Pheonix 386 BIOS 1.0 if it matters.
8 MBytes of memory
2 MFM disks, 5.25 and 3.5" HD diskettes on WD controller
2 parallel, 1 serial
3C503 (using IRQ? used for 2nd serial)
ATI VGA Wonder XL (1Meg) with bus mouse. VGA monitor
=====Symptom:
After booting, it errorneously detects Microsoft bus mouse (which I don't
have) and install the driver. Next it detects ATI bus mouse and installs
the second driver! Moreover, it thinks I had 3 parallel ports instead of 2.
After 5 minutes, it says something is "done" and just sits idle at me.
It echos back my typing and responds to alt-fn, but nothing happens.
I was so puzzled and tried the same diskette on my friend's machine
(Hauppage mother board w/ 8 Meg) and found the next prompt was "asking
root (installation) drive".
So I tried again, blindly typing in correct drive number without any success.
Although my motherboard is pretty old (no chip sets), I had no compatibility
problem with DOS and Win3. (And it's Intel-made.)
I wonder if these symptoms simply indicate my system is incompatible with
linux..? :-(
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
