Yes, I have fixed the problem. By calling Maxtor customer service I was
able to arrange for them to send a new drive ( and new version using my credit
card as collateral. I had 30 days to transfer the data and return the old hard
drive. It was semi expensive in that the mail back was like $5 or $10, but
everything else was paid for by maxtor. Just a reminder, the version of chips you
need is 63A or greater. This is listed on the top of the drive on a lable under
the CBMA (?) column.
Once this was done Linux ran very well, but ended up scrapping it because
of space limitations.
