Subject: HELP! new install; can't login From: dueck@brandonu.ca Date: 13 Mar 1993 12:00:14 CST
I am newbie to both Linux and Unix. I just downloaded SLS 99p6 and
now I can't login.
When booting from the Linux boot disk -- the one prepared at installation
time -- I get
/bin/touch: cannot execute binary file
following by several complaints about utmp and _setuent.
The login prompt appears, but fails to log me in as root,
muttering something about utmp, _setuent, and shell levels.
When I reboot from a1, I can /etc/mount /dev/hda1 /root.
At this point, /root/bin/touch fails with the same message as above.
None of the other binaries that I tried had the same problem.
I created /root/etc/utmp using cat. When I booted from the Linux diskette,
all of the _setuent messages before the login prompt went away,
but login itself still fails in exactly the same way.
What to do now?
Any help would be appreciated.
