Why are you doing such funny things ??? Why not letting the modem
do what it thinks is best (it normaly is the best!).
Also there is no 14400bps Setting for /dev/tty** (Why should there?)

Just use 19200 or 38400 .. The modem will do the speed conversion for you
(RTS/CTS or XON/XOFF is needed to do this)
Also i never would suggest doing unerrercorecting connection on V32bis
Also this V32bis has some Features which need a higher speed, or at least
it is silly to switch speeds with the Modem, if the Modem needs to switch
down to stabilze the Connection, or opposite.
Just set the speed to 38400 and everything will work really fine :-)
