I think the vga size should be set to 256 or 512k and (my experience) never
to shared. I got horizontel lines with 'shared memory' running X
and (!) msdos windows. I found a bug description in the
readme file (windows), which descripes this fault.

I got the same behaviour when I run startx the first time :-). Now everything
works fine (1024x768x8/72Hz ni :-). I use XFree1.2 and copied only Xlinus.8514
in X386/bin and made the link 'ln -s Xlinus.8514 X'.

My configuration:

I copied Xconfig.8514 to $(HOME)/Xconfig.

Edits in the 'mouse line' (I have a 3 button mouse on ttyS0)

-> MouseSystems "/dev/ttyS0"
                                 ^ (a 'S' not 's' in SLS .99.4 !)

-> in the ModeDB line I only edited the "1024x768" line.
Read the readme
files in Xserver8514, only 640x480 and 1024x768 will work, otherwise
the server breaks with a 'bad resolution' (?) fault.

I only replaced the line "1024x768" line with the "1024x768" of the NEC 5FG
entry from modeDB.txt (..X386/lib/X11/etc/modDB.txt). My monitor has the same
technical data's. There is another line for your NEC 4FG. Try it.

But, I have another problem, I can't run startx as non-root, the 8514 server
reports allways 'cannot obtain required I/O privileg level' and breaks.

what does this meen ?!? I checked all permissions (libraries,..), but
nothing helps :-(
