Someone wrote that they were considering including deskjet (ie pcl v3)
versions of their doc file with their package--I forget who and what
package.

Whomeover it was indicated that the pcl file created by dvidjp was
very much larger than the one created by dvips and gs.

I'd just like to refer you to pclcomp, from comp.sources.misc volume
30, by Tony Parkhurst.

It can confert files between most of the compressions offered by the
various versions of pcl that exists. Compression mode 5 (only on lj
IIIP--maybe in IV, too) ans mode 9 (dj 500C and portable--maybe the
550 & 550C, too) are not supported.

Gs seems to use mode 2 the most, with some mode 3. Dvidjp uses mode 2
exclusively. In both cases, converting to mode 3 reduces diskspace
quite a bit.

I'm going to try gzip'ing some large pcl files to see how much
difference compressing the mode3 vs mode2 data exists. It will have
to wait a day, though. Converting a couple small--1 page--files from
mode 2 to mode3, though, saved about 50%, w/o gzipping.
