Household tip #117: If you use LILO, always remember that it makes a
backup of your mbr the first you install it. That automatic backup has
bailed me out a couple of times now, even though the problems weren't
related to LILO. In this case, just do 'fdisk /etc/lilo/boot.0300', hit
'p', and you'll see the old partition table. Of course, this does you
absolutely no good now, but maybe it'll spare someone else a little pain
someday.
