Xfree386 1.2 has support for herc monitors (hga2 in the Xconfig file).

It works just fine. I'm running olvwm as my WM.

Howsomever, there is a patch you need to get. I believe it was posted on
comp.windows.x.i386, and it had to do with restoring text mode after
exiting X, or when switching virtual consoles when X was running.

The problem is that the Linux kernel doesn't restore the state of the
herc card when switching VTs, so once it's in graphics mode, unless
it is switched back to text mode, the screen is blank. Bill M (can't
remember his name, but he's in Australia) came up with the fix and
posted it about a week ago.

If you have trouble finding the patch, email me and I'll send you the
version I have, although there was a slight change made to it after I
got it. It should be going in the next kernel revision (I hope I hope).

Linus, can you confirm?
