One solution that has been posted is setting up lilo and letting it give
you the choice. Another solution (which worked for me is the following):
boot up, get the messed up monitor mode but let the boot procede...
after a while you can log in (blindly) then (blindly) type:
rdev -v /dev/fd0 -1
reboot
After a few moments your machine should reboot and come back up in 25x80
character mode. Instead of -1 you can substitute the vga mode choice you
want to have from the video mode menu you got when originally installing.
