Ian (or his crontab, or something else that is automatic) posts that
message in the hope that it will make a few people more read the FAQ
and other docs before posting. The goal is a worthy one, don't you
think?

If the daily message makes more than six people each week not post to
c.o.l, it has filled its purpose. I do not know whether it does, but
despite my pessimism about it (my Meta-FAQ started as something
similar, but posted once a week), I think that it might very well be a
success. Unfortunately, it might be difficult to measure it well.

I, for one, encourage Ian to continue with the posting. With the 100+
articles per day, I can't even imagine that stopping it would save
bandwith in any significant degree, and would probably increase it (in
the form of more questions answered by the docs posted).
