I dunno, I think that Hawk and BJ were closer friends, at least in heart.
Think about the things Hawk did for BJ:

On BJs first anniversary away from Peg, Hawk taped a conversation with
BJ about what he would do, and Hawk sent the tape to Peg and they got
         a movie sent back.

When Hawk was writing his Last Will and Testement, he had trouble
finding something for BJ, so instead he made a list of names of the
people BJ saved for BJs daughters so they would know why their father
was gone for the first part of their lives.

While Trapper and Hawk were buddies and did alot of things together, I think
that the friendship and feelings he had for BJ were alot stronger.
