Yes it is no problem to do that, but depending on the shell you are
using, the might be "eaten" when you press them on the command line. Try
the following:
cat <return>
enter any strange character (e.g. "a diaeresis" that is on your
keyboard), it should display correctly.

Here I think you will get into trouble. bear in mind that you have
"IBM-ASCII" under MSLOSS and "ANSI-ASCII" under Linux. They are quite
different in the 128-255 range (Complain at IBM).
