I suspect that your ethernet card is not being recognized at boot.
What type of card do you have? You will have to look in
/usr/src/linux/net/inet/CONFIG to make sure that your card
is uncommented. The default is set up for the WD card.
I'm using the NE2000 quite well.

Yes, you must create the path /proc/net owner root.root
