I had two linux boxes set up for a couple of days on a Novell 3.11
ethernet, and had no problems with ftp or telnet between either one, or even
ftp'ing to the Novell server. My users didn't even realize I was up to
anything (at least until I started cheering over INN working). Using trn
on one with the other as the NNTP server seemed to work as well. I had even
tried QVTNet on a couple of PCs, again no problems with telnet or news reading
to either machine.
Your mileage may vary, tho.
