You asked my opinion of what I'd do with $5000 for an os. My opinion
is that I would go for a refurbished Sun workstation. I realize that
getting a different computer goes beyond what you were asking, but
that's what I'd do...
As for benchmarks, they've been a controversy since day one and the
variables between machines just make it more difficult to get any
accurate comparison. I recently compared different 'benchmarks' on one
of my pc's and one said I was getting about 7 mips, another said it
was more like 13. When I first got into computers in 1975, benchmarks
were a hotly debated topic and remain so to this day. I'll stay out
of THAT arena, thank you.
For your Sun, I'd suggest getting a subscription to SunExpert magazine.
It's not only informative, it's free.
The address is :
  Subscriber Services
  P.O. Box 3276

It's full of ads that will help you find whatever parts and/or soft-
ware that you need to keep your Sun shining (and you'll be surprized
at the prices of refurbished systems - they are quite practical and
often come with better warranties than *new* systems).
