Hi, Karel

did you read /usr/X386/lib/X11/etc/README.trident ?
If not, do so, but don't trust it. I tried it out myself, doubling the dot
frequencies as recommended. This worked well for 640x480 at 50 MHz, but
with 57, 65 or 75 MHz my monitor (Eizo F 550 iw) complained.

It does this by beeping and switching off. The handbook says that it
switches off when the video signal is missing or outside the specs.
This leads me to the assumption that either the frequency testing routine
fails to get the right oscillator (don't know how this works) and takes one
which is much too high, or my monitor is much too nervous about this, or
the line frequencies are doubled, too, this way.

Maybe any wizzard could comment on this.
If I'm wrong, I'm terribly sorry for stealing some man-nights of work away
from people searching a spurious error.
If I'm right, this information could save quite a number of monitor lives.

So long, ph
