From: gda@creare.com (Gray Abbott) Subject: Using linux as a gateway w/SLIP Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1993 04:04:55 GMT
I've been running a Linux system all of 1 week, and I've been reading
this newsgroup only a little longer, but I have a fairly urgent need
to put together a machine to act as a gateway to the Internet, so I
have to stop lurking and ask some questions. I didn't see these in the
FAQs I have.
I've seen some discussion of SLIP for linux, but it's not clear to me what
its status is. Is it working, or still in test mode? Where do I get it?
I'm running the SLS distribution 0.99p6, right now, and it doesn't have any
sign of SLIP in it.
Secondly, does the SLIP support allow me to use the machine as a gateway?
That is, can I run an Ethernet connection and a SLIP connection on the same
machine at the same time, thus connecting my LAN to the outside world?
Can I run a version of "gated" on linux, or is the "routed" better than
average?
Finally, is this a *bad idea*, for some reason (e.g. robustness, security,
sending undesirable traffic out to the Internet, etc.)?
I've set up a gateway before (on a Xenix machine, no less!) so I'm not
entirely clueless, but I could use some instant education with respect to
linux.
You can respond by Email, but I expect I'm not the only person who is
interested in the answers. I'll be happy to summarize to the newsgroup.
