I wonder if it might not be better just to design a standard Linux 3[4]86
motherboard around one of the chipsets available, with a BIOS suited to
linux, (not sure iff this would be worth it). This way we could keep most
of the tough 386 code to do with memory management and tasking but just have
new drivers for a faster I/O system. This way we could make a standard for
> 16mb of ram. If we were to recreate the ISA bus on an R3000 board then
why not just keep the 386 and alter the system architecture to suit linux.

(The other main advantage is that this could allow the creation of new Linux
I/O eg a high performance graphics card, by saving the time required to
port all the assembler stuff to an R3000).
