As a recent 'onlooker' could I add my two-penworth? (Sorry, but I'm English!)

I am a *traditional* hacker; I've been working with various systems for 25
years, and really like what you guys are trying to do (both 386BSD & Linux).

However, in order for me to survive in the commercial world as a consultant
I have to recognise that the big corporates *are* won over by the hype put
about by Microsoft and others. As a result I run MSDOS and Windows, and use
Word and Excel as my prime applications, for compatibility with my clients.

Until Un*x offers them the range of general office software that they need,
networked PCs, using MSDOS, Windows and Netware, will be their preference.

I have similar problems presenting courses on Un*x for IBM mainframe users.
Until fairly recently many of the operational facilities that they take for
granted, such as full print queue management, and tape management were
missing from Un*x. They're not even that good now.

So please, let's not have all this in-fighting. I believe that systems like
386BSD and Linux represent the best way forward for most users, but we
have a lot of prejudice to overcome before they will be really accepted.
There also needs to be a much more user-friendly set of applications.

Lecture over!

Martin
