Here's a summary of what people had to say about their notebooks in
relation to X adn power management. Hope it helps.
Grid 1660 386sl: most powermanagement things work, like disk spinning
up / down, function keys control the disk and screen, screen blanks,
and is controllable from a bios setup. suspend mode is "bad news,"
however.
X runs fine in mono mode. even with the 386, X is responsive.

Compaq Contura 4/25, 8M, 210HD: runs fine, but kernel printk's when
the drive spins up, but these can be directed to an unused VT, or
compiled out of the kernel. Suspend mode untested. power management
is through the bios, and various power levels can be selected through
function keys.
X runs fine in mono, but the LCD shadow effect is "kind of annoying."
- jdalton@cnet.shs.arizona.edu (Jeff Dalton)
WinBook: power management completely from bios, "they advise against
using power.com." display is a standard CL chipset, and suports
external monitor. unfortunatly, untested with Linux.
- bruschke@braque.me.udel.edu (Michiel Bruschke)
Dell 325SL and NEC Versa: Suspend and X both work. Check usenet for
more details.
