It appears that you are assuming that each copy of SCO (or any UNIX
for that matter) is being used by one and only one person. This assumption
would be imperitive if you were to make a valid comparison between *NIX
and Microsoft Windows 3.1 (which is, of course, a single-user system).
Unfortunately, a valid user base comparison cannot be made between muti-user
and single-user systems based upon the number of each copy sold. There
are still many computer vendors who "bundle" MS-Windows with their machines
and some people never use it. On the other hand, for each copy of SCO
sold there are probably at least 5-10 users and as many as 100 on some.
As for OS's fading, I seem to remember that at one time MS had the lion's
share of the OS market for Intel based PC's. While that market percentage
is still high, it is nowhere near what it used to be in the late 1980's.
