Actually this is not true. Lots of hardware vendors bundle MSW and
MSDOS with the computer. (This is the subject of the FTC
investigation, because this is a trading practise which bars
competition). So around 10-15 million computers are sold each year
with MSW.
That does not remotely equal the number of people who "come up into
MSW on each boot". Today I read that the number of _registered_ MSW
users (those who filled up the card and sent it to MS) is 800,000.
That is a far cry from 20-50 million.
