Subject: 99.9 kernel bounces logins why ??

Anyone had this and fixed it.

Compiled the 99.9 kernel and booted from it OK. However @ login after giving a user name such as root and hitting return the login prompt is redisplayed.
However if the account starts x then you can get in with x.

Whats going on ??
