Subject: Re: RFD on splitting comp.os.linux From: hayden@krypton.mankato.msus.edu (Robert A. Hayden) Date: 2 Jun 1993 19:52:38 -0600
One of the things I would like to discuss again as a possible new linux
group is:
comp.os.linux.apps.x
WHY? You ask?
The reason is this. I am a linux user. I have been for over a year now.
But I do not use xwindows because I have not the hardware to support it
(and actually prefer text anyways). Because I never use X and know
nothing about it, I quite obviously have no interest in X based apps.
This in and of itself isn't a problem. I could in theory be able to
select what i do and don't read when looking at subjects.
The problem is that it is seldom easy to tell if a particular application
is X based or not. As a matter of fact, on a couple of occasions I've
read about an interesting app and downloaded it, only to find out then
that it actually was X based.
By creating two groups (c.o.l.applications and c.o.l.applications.x), it
allows from the start for a differentiation to be made. Yes, I know there
are x groups other places, but not particularily for linux-based X.
The usual anti-group argument of a kill file does not apply for this
differentiation because there would be no consistent subject lines to
differentiate X apps from ASCII apps.
Please consider the benefits of this co-apps group. I believe that in the
long run it will be considered a useful group in doing what the group
split is trying to accomplish, make it easier for people to subscribe to
thise groups that more closely apply to their individual interests.
Thanks you for your time.
