Subject: X and Linux virtual consoles

Hello
 A while back a gentleman was trying to figure out why when he was running
  X and he pressed ctrl-alt-f# to switch to a different virtual console, he
lost his x session. It didn't quit running, it just displayed the text from the
startup of X and sat there hung. If anybody can remeber the answer or knows a
way to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated.
