Subject: troubleshoot SLS' Xfree86?
Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1993 02:00:06 GMT

I've installed the mailorder SLS package (.99pl9), including its Xfree86
package. I have several sample Xconfig files mailed to me by helpful
people, and the timing numbers look about the same and match what I get
doing the calculations manually. (Orchid Pro IIs, Sony 1304-HG) I've
got a Logitech M-MD15L mouse, which looks ok under
   /usr/X386/tst/mouse/mouse Microsoft /dev/mouse

My Xconfig is in /usr/X386/lib/X11 with modes 644. I'm pretty sure
it's right.

When I invoke
   (startx 2>&1) > /xerrors
a few messages appear for an instant and then the screen flashes and
goes dark before I can read them. (About the ninth time I thought I saw
a PROTOCOL NOT SUPPORTED) There's no further disk activity and no
response to the keyboard, including ctl-alt-(num+) and ctl-alt-del.
After a reboot and e2fsck, /xerrors is empty. I know everybody's setup
is different and nobody else has this problem, but is there any way to
find out what startx is doing? Is there any way to SLOW IT DOWN so I
can read the messages before they vanish? Is there some other way to
redirect the messages?
(Yes, I've been watching c.o.l for months and read every FAQ.
Yes, I'll tell you what's missing.)

ps. This system is great! I've got news and mail working. It was easier
than on SCO (better support!). I'm writing a simple ASCII file describing
what I had to fix. Who wants to see it?
