Yes, some people do prefer twm and its derivitives..
I had to use DEC's DECWindows which is basically X and mwm for two
summers, and I hated it. I also had to use olwm on some Suns until I
got around to installing twm.
The reasons why I like twm much better than mwm:
1) The icon manager is, IMHO *much* better than mwm's icon box, or olwm's
plain icons. Why? Well because you can have all your icons sorted in
alphabetical order, taking up only as much space as they really need.
This makes finding a particular window quite easy.
I find having icons sitting all over the screen and taking up lots of space,
or using mwm's icon box nad having to scroll around to find
something very distracting, not to mention annoying.
2) Only twm and its derivatives (I think, correct me if I'm wrong), allow
you to set the color of the title bar (and of the icon) based on the
text in the title bar (and icon). This means that I can set up my
.twmrc file to make logins to foo have red titles, logins to bar have
green titles, and emacs'es have purple titles. This way, without even
having to uncover more than a pixel or two of the icon manager, I can
find my windows based on their color.
3) This may also be wrong, but I think that the twm family are the only
window managers to allow you to define your own functions.
I realize that twm isn't as pretty as mwm, but have you seen ctwm 3.0?
It looks about as three-d'ish as mwm. The only thing that I would love
to see added would be decorations for the sides and corners of the window
a la fvwm, and mwm. If I ever get time, I might hack that in myself.
Does anybody know if mwm grew out of twm? Its initialization
files and commands which are available look like a subset of twm,
where as olwm's init files bear no resemblance to either.
