Regarding the Seagate St-1144A. I finally got it to work with the
Western Digital drive as the master by replacing my controller card.
I started out with a WD controller which doesn't have a jumper for
drive active LED. I got a second controller for $12 and happily used
that for a year. Only Linux found a problem with it.
BTW, the 1144A is considerably slower than the newer 340Mb drives,
so you want to make the new drive the workhorse.
Last weekend I retired the 1144A in favor of a second WD drive that
I got REAL CHEAP at the ACP swap meet in Southern California.
