That's one of the silliest arguments I've read in this group. How is
one to learn to be a Unix hacker if he already has to be one to install
a Unix?

You obviously haven't the foggiest where many of the Linux enthusiasts
are coming from. It's from the DOS world for whom the installation has
to be something they find familiar from there. SLS is a step toward
that, but it's not quite there yet.

I feel that for a full acceptance of Linux a working QIC40/80 driver for
tape drives common in the DOS world is also essential. Without it is
just too much of a risk or inconvenience to commit Linux to any critical
application. As it is right now, Linux, IMHO, can only enjoy its
present popularity till a low cost, low resource hungry Unix clone is
brought to the market with good and convenient backup capability. Many
of the current Linux fans would probably scrape up the $100-200 for such
a system even if they can enjoy Linux free. Who knows? The Mark
Williams Co. just might be working on such a thing.

Nothing in the above should be construed as a criticism of Linus and his
helpers. They have already given too much of their time and talent to
the rest of us to deserve anything but praise and gratitude.
