Subject: System administration tool ???

Hmmm, just wondering ...

Some Unix systems have these nifty system administration tools (for
instance, HPUX has SAM, AIX has SMIT). These tools let you configure
your machine, network, printers, mail ..., in such a way that, unless
you want a very sophisticated setup, everything will run smoothly.
SAM lets you even compile configurable parameters into the kernel!

Moreover, if you are not a Unix expert to start with, they prevent you
from having to read and re-read man pages and/or manuals (which, to my
opinion, have a tendency to be quite understandable once you know
what's going on), or, in the worst case, not even knowing where to
start looking (newbies to Unix, for instance).

I think most people who are just happy to have a SLS version up and
running, will highly appreciate such a tool, if only to find out where
the configurable files for all kinds of applications are in this flavor
of Unix.

So, is anything like this already available, or is work on it already in progress?

If not, you may also read this post as: if I'm not quite alone on this, I am willing to offer my services to such a project.

Cheers,
