Subject: Character set is junked after X

After running an X session (usually olvwm) I find that the character set
is 'junked', most of it is readable, but some characters appear as strange
graphics, not even in the ANSI character set!!

I am running an SLS-1.01 based system (XFree86 1.2 & Linux 0.99.9), can
anyone help me please?
