Subject: low refresh with ATI XL and Mag MX15F

I was over at my friend's house last weekend and saw Linux for the first time,
after hearing so many good things about it. One thing that disturbed me was
the refresh rate on his monitor which could possibly cause one headaches if
one stared at it too long. However, when he showed me MS Windows, the refresh
seem a lot better and the image seemed more 'stable' and certainly a lot more
easier on the eyes.

He claims he's installed Linux several times now, but always got the same
result. I'm concerned about this since I will be purchasing an entirely new
machine soon with the plans to run Linux/X as my prime OS. I was considering
the same monitor/card setup as my friend but if this combo isn't as good as
others, I'd appreciate other suggestions. My monitor will probably be MAG or an
NEC-4FG. On the other hand, it's quite possible that my friend doesn't have
the optimal settings for X on his Linux system and this could be what is
causing the problems (very likely, I think). So if someone out there has this
monitor and vga card combo, my friend and I would be most appreciative if you
could send us your settings. Thanks.
