cc1 dies during compilation

gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 4

Does anybody know what causes this error?
What does signal 4 mean?

Any hints are welcome.

versions:
gcc 2.3.3
0.99.pl9
hardware:
386DX40, ULSI 387/40, UMC-chipset, 8MB RAM

P.S.: This error occures also with turbo off (20MHz ?) and DRAM-timing SLOW

Thanks in advance

Marios
