Subject: Text-based Linux with a Weitek P9000?
Date: 12 Jul 1993 04:30:46 GMT

Hello All!

Is anybody running Linux with a Weitek P9000 based video card?
In particular an Orchid P9000? I am planning to purchase one, but there
are rumors that some P9000 based cards will lock the system. I
am well aware that the P9000 is not directly supported by Linux and not even
remotely by XFree86. I am really just interested in running the
Orchid P9000 under text-based Linux.
I believe the main problem with running the Orchid P9000 under Linux
stems from the fact that there are two chips on the card, 1) the P9000 ( :-)
and 2) a Weitek 5286 (used to maintain VGA compatiblity). Anybody out there
in netland who can shed a bit of light on this? Since the P9000 is quite
expensive, I don't really want to be stuck with a video card that will not
even run under text-based Linux.. :-)

Thanks a million for any information, and if possible, please reply by e-mail
to save some bandwidth. I will post a summary if there is interest.
