Have you ever heard the expression
"the problems we face are not technical in nature"
The problem is not one of "architecture" but rather of "markitecture".
We just don't have good, affordable software at our disposal. Why?
Because large SW companies find far better return from advertising
and marketing than they do from R&D. Also, good people get bogged
down in micro vs macro religious wars (not always not in a competition
for research money).
Everybody is into Linux for their own reasons. Mine is that I am very
tired of using software that is fundamentally mismatched to the
capabilities of the HW that I use, and to the capabilities that I
want.
