Subject: Sound support for Linux?
Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1993 13:52:27 GMT

Hi there. I installed Linux about two weeks ago (SLS 1.02 dist.) and
have enjoyed it ever since (installed 99pl10 kernel, libc4.4, net-2,
various other patches...) I didn't have any trouble (well, minimal
trouble anyway), and I am happily enjoying the benefits of having X,
SLIP, true multitasking, and all the niceties of a Unix machine at
home. I've been administering various flavors of Unix machines for
over 2 years, and while I can't say Linux is the most bug-free Unix
I've encountered, it's definitely better than some out there and I
think it is one of the *most* efficient and practical in memory usage
and disk usage, if not the most. (Shared libraries, dynamically
loading executables, disk caching using all available memory...
excellent!) I can't thank Linus and the rest of the developers enough.

Anyway, enough praise and groveling, this isn't rec.humor.oracle. :)
Here are the (3) questions I've compiled (hmm, maybe we need
comp.os.linux.oracle - just kidding ;) )

1) I compiled nethack 3.1.2 yesterday (wow! X support, I haven't
played nethack in a while!), and saw that it had sound support for
386BSD and other Unixes over the PC speaker (a /dev/speaker device
driver.) Where can I obtain one, or do I have to modify the code
distributed with nethack so that that driver will run under Linux?
(eeek! port a device driver? run away! run away! :) )

***2) *very important question* Which soundboard should I be thinking of
purchasing for Linux? Midi support is a high priority, as is being
able to play and record CD quality stereo sound. I'm looking at the
Soundblaster 16 ASP and the Pro Audio Spectrum 16. (In case it
matters, I have a 486/66 w/ 8M RAM.) Which card will Linux cooperate
the best with and has the most features supported by Linux?
(If you know the answers to all three of my questions, but are only
willing to answer one, answer this one. ;) )

3) How do I get logout entries written to wtmp? (Minor nitpick here.)
The last command doesn't work properly, it always says "still logged
in" for all entries. Also, finger always says "Never logged in" when
fingering a user that isn't logged in at the time, although
/usr/adm/lastlog does exist (created it myself, it wasn't in SLS),
nothing gets written there. I've tried making the permissions on both
/etc/wtmp and /usr/adm/lastlog 777, no luck. Suggestions?

Well, gotta be going. My further plans include installing mgetty for
faxmodem support, getting dosemu working, and.....? Great OS, guys.
