   I have installed Linux for 2 months but I found that it was less useful to
   me than I have hoped. I tried to do my CS programming homework twice with
   no luck. There is no "socket" in Linux (which I think follow System V).

That's not true. There are sockets for Linux.
I use a Sparc (BSD) at work and have very few problems taking source home
:-) (although I don't know much about memory management).
