The problem is that you enabled at least one of the three advanced options
of the AHA1542C. These are
Support for drives bigger than 1GB.
Dynamical scan SCSI-bus for Boot-devices.
Support for more than two drives under DOS.

You will see a warning that these options are not compatible with old
software. As linux accesses the AHA1542C as an AHA1542A the adapter thinks
that you are using old software and "protects" your disk from damage
(i. e. it stops working).

So disable this three options and than you can enable the Bios again.
